The Pope's Comments: Global news

The Pope's recent comments about Islam, which seem to have been reported a bit out of context, have stimulated a growing controversy. Google News has a list of close to a thousand stories from around the world. What do you think? Has this been overblown? What is the role of the press in inter-religion relations?

One of my concerns is about the stories the press tells about these kinds of conflicts. They often present narratives of worlds at war, with the entire Muslim World rising up in an irrational response to an ambiguously offensive and apparently unintended remark.

Hmm. This somewhat depends on who "they" are.
One of the problems is that the Pope's comment repeated a generality about "Islam" (i.e., everyone of Islamic faith). The whole Islamic world, however, is NOT rising up in violence against the remarks, only a small fraction, typically the most extreme and hooligan aspects. Nevertheless, I see your point that from news reports, it just reinforces the "truth" about Islam and violence.
