Vietnam Radio

I am one who loves to travel. I have an immense appreciation for culture and wanting to experience that culture. One of closest girlfriends is Vietnamese. I thought that since she could be my interpreter it would be really interesting to see what a Communist country would be broadcasting. So with her help I found a really interesting radio broadcast. http://www.rfa.org/vietnamese/amthanh/ To be honest with you, I was expecting more propaganda than anything. As far as my interpreter and I were able to find out, it is ran by the government. But as we listened we found out that it was more like a news station. Supposedly most of the stations over in Vietnam are just like this one that I found. They are used more for broadcasting news and event and then some, but limited music unlike most of our radio stations here, atleast FM that is. During this one hour my interpreter and I listened they talked about cows being infected by mad cow desease, they talked about how the government wanted to make better relations with the Vatican and also how the government is planning on reconstructing most of the countries railway system that was first laid out during the French rule. In addition, this radio broadcast did except phone calls asking for people's input. It was also really interesting, my interpreter and I figured out that the folks doing the talking on the radio must be from Southern Vietnam because they kept refering to Ho Chi Minh City as Saigon, after the communist took over South Vietnam in April of 1975 they changed the name to Ho Chi Minh, so we concluded they must be from the South, we both were suprised by that. To conclude my blog, this radio station is allowed by the government for the people who call in to have freedom of speech, for a communist country, I find that extremely interesting.

After a LONG search, This was the radio station I found in Sweden they had vast array of eclectic music from punk to talk radio, there was even a play list of all NOFX songs i presume the DJ is a huge NOFX fan. i found the vast array of genres found on one station to be amazing, and it's all run by college students in my age range. also, as a sidenote i searched some world music stations in my media player, and i found a variety of stuff all on pone station, everything from 50 cent to NOFX to cultural music, maybe we in the U.S. could take a page from the the world book and be more diverse on individual radio stations, rather than genre-defined.

2day fm Australia

http://www.2dayfm.com.au/#section-1

The radio station i found was called 2day radio based out of Sydney Autstralia. I found it interesting to hear the music and commercials for cars and local events were similar to what you would hear around here. The main web site was interesting as many of the pop culture icons such as Gwen Stefani and Pink were to be guest on upcoming shows. I feel that listening to radio from across the world in another time zone was quite interesting as it was late at night here but extremely early in the morning there. They also had a cool feature where they counted down the top 5 songs of 1994 on the same day. This was similar to local station jamn 94.5's back in the day buffet selection where they play songs from the early and mid 90's. Scary to think that this is considered "old" music now no matter what country you live in. Guess I'm just getting OLD!
